Posted on: Monday, August 1st, 2011

Ugo Mozie is a Nigerian born, Texas bread, LA raised fashion warrior dredging his way to success in the concrete jungle that is The Big Apple. He is a budding fashion designer that fell into his current role as stylist to the stars, via his own ostentatious yet brooding style. Ugo is the personal stylist of Dawn Richard of Dirty Money and has styled the songstress for several of her photo shoots. Ugo has been described as a stylist for the stylish. We caught up with Ugo to see what “jewels” he had for some of our readership.

Where are you from?

I am from Nigeria

Do you think that growing up there changed your aspect of style? We know not everyone is born with style and some people have to create their own unique style, did you have to create your own?

The places i grew up definitely have an influence in my personal style. Living in Nigeria, LA, TX, and UK all played a part in my fashion sense. I don’t think i was born with style but looking through my baby pictures my mom definitely kept on point. She had me dressed to the tee in every picture. I eventually grew into my own style when i was about 11 years old.

How did you get so involved within the fashion industry? Do you have any regrets being so involved, if so can you name them?

I got in the fashion industry when i was about 13. I used to model and act as a child. I got tired of it when i was 16 and decided i wanted to stay in the industry but be my own boss. I had a very hard time taking direction. I have no regrets. Everything that has occurred thus far definitely plays a role to where my career is today.

What is one thing you have learned within this industry, which can help new aspiring designers and stylists?

In this industry, i learned the best way to earn respect and success is to be yourself. Do not conform to To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment. Believe in what you do and others will too.

Where do yourself in five years?

In 5 years i will be an international Mogul. I plan to own a Magazine, Club, Clothing Line, and a styling agency.

Where do you see fashion in five years?

In 5 years menswear becoming more risque. I see guys embracing the fashion world openly. Guys are still very reserved and conformed but times are slowly changing.

What is your point of view with everyone wearing high-end brands just to wear them? We know lots of different people have different opinions on this subject, what is your opinion?

When i see people in designers from head to toe, I’m more disgusted than impressed. I appreciate high end labels but i appreciate them more when they are worn the right way. I believe in personal style. Prices or names do not have as much recognition as much as the way you put what you wear together does.

What would you say to anyone who wants to be a stylist?

Research what a stylist is first. Understand what the job entails and then make sure you are ready to fully embrace the title. A stylist is more than someone who can dress nice or put together pieces. The main part of the career lies in the business and marketing aspect.

Please give us your last words of wisdom, Mr. Mozie.

You can do anything you want or be anywhere you want. Regardless of your age or race.
